The Unfiltered Reason Your Staff Keep Quitting

With so much uncertainty I wanted to find a way to add value to you non-profit leaders, with no intent to sell you anything here. I figured I'd create these Weekly Emails I call Monday Motivational Minute because Mondays are historically the roughest days, and a minute . . . well because you're very busy people. In these, I'll add creative, quick, actionable takeaways for you to try (All in a minute read). No pressure, no need to respond, read at your leisure or unsubscribe if it doesn't add value.

Happy Monday,
Ughhh! Another two-week notice will land on your desk soon aaaand the insane cycle will begin again; recruiting, interviewing, training... only for someone else to leave the next week. It's a freakin' nightmare that feels like the movie "50 First Dates" without the romance! (Best Adam Sandler movie)
During my banking career managing 40 entry-level employees, I learned the secret; it's rarely about money! . . . (Ok, Stop rolling your eyes, let me explain myself)
The 3 POWERFUL reasons people actually stay:
• PASSION - They crave knowing their work matters. Isn't that why you stay despite the headaches you have to deal with everyday? 🙄
• OWNERSHIP - When people truly own something, they protect it by any means necessary. Legos and Ikea make billions in the notion that people appreciate things more if they build them.🤔
• GROWTH - We naturally crave new challenges. The thought of doing the same entry-level job forever petrifies us all! Remeber how ecstatic you were everytime you got promoted? Remeber how little the increase was?😒
Actionable Task:
In your next employee 1-on-1:
• PASSION: Ask them, "What happens if your role disappeared?" Guide them to feel the devastating impact to guests if their role didn't exist anymore.
• OWNERSHIP: Trust them to lead with a meaningful project. Yes, it's risky, but worth it to keep your best people!
• GROWTH: Share with them the job description of the next level up and ask them what they're excited to learn next? Watch their face light up!
Remember: Retention isn't solved through raises alone. Hearts stay where they're challenged to grow, trusted to lead, and connected to purpose. Your paycheck gets them to say yes to the job. Passion, ownership, and growth keeps them there.
Have an amazing week!
